Although the oldest church in Lignano - the St. Zacharias Pineta church - was build in the 16th Century, the place consisted of only a few farmhouses, stood in the malaria-infested swamp. In the early 20th Century the section was already used for bathing. These times the beach could be reached only by boats from Marano.
In the thirties years, the first lakeside terrace built on the site of today's "Terrazza al mare". In these days came the first tourists, predominantly Italian summer guests.
After 1950 Lignano Pineta originated with its unusual, spiral landscaped main road and the mass tourism found its way. Today constantly about 7,000 inhabitants live mainly in the center of Sabbiadoro. The marina and the golf club also brought visitors outside the summer season.
